NASCAR Ovals, Cayman R Demo, and More

It’s getting to be that busy season when there are PCA events every weekend. And Drivers Ed is no different. From July to November, we have monthly events.

Our joint DE hosted by Carolinas, Hurricane and Blue Ridge Regions was held August 14th and 15th. Drivers from all 3 regions enjoyed the high banks of Charlotte Motor Speedway(CMS). We’d last visited CMS back in 2008 for a post-Parade DE, so many participants were glad to see PCA return to CMS. Running the NASCAR oval section of the track is definitely a different experience than you’ll find on any other road course. The event was sponsored by Apex Performance and Hendrick Porsche who both contributed prizes for the event. With quiet hours in effect at CMS on Sunday morning, the on- track activities were held in the afternoon. During the relaxed morning, the 75 drivers participated in the Tech Quiz and Show & Shine organized by Blue Ridge Region. By the time those activities concluded, the expected rain had cleared and track was drying out fast. And in July, we have enough daylight to get a full 8 hours of track time, with run groups on track til 7:50 pm. Almost like clockwork, the afternoon showers held off until we had wrapped up

the day’s track sessions. Monday was trouble free as everyone enjoyed a second day at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This was a great event with staff resources coming from all 3 regions. From the Carolinas, thanks to Marty Barrett & Shane Tisdale for providing Chief Instructor duties, Lee Stabler for handling Classroom Instruction as well as all the other Carolinas Instructors.

Our September DE is just around the corner with 80 drivers currently registered. We’ll be back at Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) in Kershaw, SC on September 10th and 11th. The fall CMP DE at the 2.25 mile, 14 turn facility is always a popular event to meet new friends and reconnect with fellow track enthusiasts. CMP is a great facility for Driver Education events with technical sections to enforce those newly learned techniques. In addition, Porsche Cars North America and Porsche Sport Driving School will be bringing 2 Cayman R’s to the event. Over the course of the weekend, participants will be able to ride with the PSDS Instructors for hot laps in the Cayman R’s. They expect they’ll go through a set of tires each day, so that should give you a good idea how hot those laps will be.

Coming up in October, is our annual Club Race at CMP. This year, there will be 2 DE groups on the October 29th/30th weekend. For the first time, the DE will have a student group. So drivers of all skill levels can come down for the weekend, watch the racing action and get on track themselves. Registration will open at the end of August.

And to close out the year is our 3 day event at Virginia International Raceway on November 18th-20th. This is our annual return to 3.27 mile VIR Full course in Alton, VA . Friday November 18th will be a solo only day, with Saturday & Sunday the traditional student, solo and instructor groups. This date has become a fixture on most everyone’s calendar, great people, great facility, great finale to the year.
