The annual Protech Chili Cook Off was held on Saturday, January 28th at Protech Motorsports in Greenville. Bill and Frank Gerwig of Protech hosted the event, which is eagerly anticipated and very well attended every year. This year was no exception as over 92 people attended and it seemed like everyone had a great time. Not only did Bill and Frank make the shop available to us, they provided the soft drinks, water, utensils and paper plates. They also set up a TV so we could keep up with the 24 Hours of Daytona race while eating some great chili.

Now, let’s get to the particulars. There were over 20 chili pots entered in the judging, ranging from mild to wild. In addition to the chili, a new judging category was added this year for appetizers and desserts. There were 22 appetizers and deserts for the group to share and judge. Our thanks go to all the entrants for bringing a great variety of tasty food. I can assure you no one went home hungry.

After the votes were tabulated, it was time to recognize the winners. First and foremost, we presented a plaque to Bill and Frank Gerwig in appreciation for their ongoing support of the Carolinas Region PCA and it’s members. I think we caught them by surprise with this recognition as evidenced by the expressions on their faces.

The winner in the appetizer / dessert category was Mandy Jenkins for her fabulous hot crab dip. As for the main event, the group photo accompanying this report shows the chili winners and our hosts. They are (from l. to r.) John Corvin (2nd place), Bill Gerwig (host), Paul Leuskow (3rd place), Shelley & Terryl Johnson (1st place), John Budinich (Area Director/Emcee) and Frank Gerwig (Host). Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all of those who participated by bringing chili, appetizers and deserts to be judged, or just by coming to eat, talk and have a good time.

Until next year...
